The key difference

Skin generally needs both water and oil. That is why the two can work well together.

What research exists on the oil?

Studies on the seed oil are mostly animal studies. One study in rats found that cold-pressed seed oil from Tunisian prickly pear improved healing of full-thickness wounds; another found a nano-emulsion of the oil worked better than the plain oil in a rat wound model. Reviews also note the fruit and seeds contain vitamin E compounds. None of this proves anti-ageing effects in people, which is the claim you will most often see in marketing.

How to layer them

  1. Cleanse.
  2. Apply cactus gel to slightly damp skin.
  3. Press 1–3 drops of prickly pear oil over the top, or mix one drop into your moisturiser.
  4. Morning: finish with sunscreen.

Very cheap "prickly pear oil" is a red flag. Check that the ingredient list shows only Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil, not a blend led by a cheaper carrier oil.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix prickly pear oil into cactus gel?

You can mix a drop into a pea-sized amount of gel in your palm right before applying. Do not add oil into the whole tub, as it can destabilise the product and introduce bacteria.

Why is prickly pear seed oil so expensive?

The seeds contain only a small amount of oil, so producing it takes a lot of fruit. Very cheap listings may be diluted or mislabelled.

Is prickly pear seed oil good for oily skin?

It is a light oil, but any oil can feel heavy on oily skin. Try a single drop at night and see how your skin responds.
