Cactus Gel After Sun: Does It Help Sunburn?

A cool gel can make sun-warmed skin feel much better. It is a comfort measure, not a cure, and it is definitely not sunscreen.

What actually helps a mild sunburn

Get out of the sun, take cool showers, apply a soothing moisturiser while skin is damp, drink extra water, and consider ibuprofen or aspirin if appropriate for you. A cool, fragrance-free gel fits into the "soothing moisturiser" step.

What dermatologists recommend

The American Academy of Dermatology's sunburn advice includes:

Note that their advice names aloe vera, not cactus specifically. There is no research we know of testing prickly pear gel on human sunburn. A cooling, fragrance-free cactus gel can still feel pleasant in the same way.

How to use cactus gel after sun

  1. Cool the skin first with a shower or damp cloth.
  2. Apply a generous, gentle layer of refrigerated, fragrance-free gel.
  3. Reapply when skin feels hot or tight.
  4. Wear loose clothing and stay out of the sun while it heals.

Avoid

Seek medical help for blistering over a large area, fever, chills, headache, confusion, nausea, or a sunburn on a baby.

Prevention beats any gel

Shade, sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, UV sunglasses and broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen SPF 30+ are what actually protect your skin.

Frequently asked questions

Is cactus gel or aloe better for sunburn?

Aloe vera has more research, and the American Academy of Dermatology suggests a moisturiser containing aloe vera or soy for sunburned skin. A plain, fragrance-free cactus gel may also feel soothing.

Should I put cactus gel on blisters?

No. Blistering means a more serious (second-degree) burn. Don't pop blisters; keep them clean and protected, and seek medical advice for large areas.

Does cactus gel have SPF?

No. Cactus gel provides no meaningful sun protection. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.
