Why it can work

Many cactus soothing gels use carbomer as a thickener, a polymer that also appears in some styling gels. On wet hair, a gel can clump curls together and help them dry with more definition and less frizz.

How to try it

  1. Start with soaking-wet hair after conditioning.
  2. Apply a leave-in conditioner if you normally use one.
  3. Rake or "praying hands" a small amount of cactus gel through sections.
  4. Scrunch gently and let air dry or diffuse on low.
  5. Once dry, scrunch out any slight cast.

Pros and cons

ProsCons
Light, soft holdWeak hold in humidity
Usually fragrance-lightMay flake if overused
Hydrating feelResults vary hugely by hair type
Inexpensive, multi-useNot designed or tested as a styler

When to buy a real curl gel

If you need strong, long-lasting hold, or your hair is very coarse or humidity-prone, a gel formulated for curls will usually perform better.

Frequently asked questions

Will cactus gel give a strong hold?

Usually not. Soothing gels give a soft, light hold at most. For humid weather or tight curls you may need a dedicated styling gel.

Will it make my curls crunchy?

Most soothing gels dry soft. If you get a cast, scrunch it out once fully dry.
