1. The chilled 10-minute mask
Apply a thicker layer of refrigerated cactus gel to clean skin. Relax for 10 minutes, then pat in the remainder or wipe off the excess with a damp cloth. Follow with moisturiser.
2. The overnight hydrating layer
At night, apply moisturiser, then a thin layer of gel on top (or the other way round if your moisturiser is very rich). Wake up to softer-feeling skin.
3. The DIY sheet mask
Moisten a clean, reusable cotton sheet mask or compressed mask tablet with a mix of cactus gel and a little toner. Leave on 10–15 minutes. Use a fresh mask each time.
4. Spot cooling
Dab chilled gel on areas that feel warm after a workout or a hot commute.
What not to add
- Lemon, lime or other citrus: irritating and can react with sunlight.
- Baking soda: very alkaline, disrupts the skin's natural pH.
- Essential oils: common allergy triggers.
- Raw cactus pulp: risk of tiny spines and bacteria. See DIY cactus gel.
Frequently asked questions
Can I mix lemon or baking soda into cactus gel?
Please don't. Lemon juice and baking soda can irritate skin, and citrus on the skin plus sunlight can cause a reaction called phytophotodermatitis.
Can I sleep with a cactus gel mask on?
A thin layer under or over moisturiser is fine for most people. A very thick layer can transfer to the pillow and feel sticky.
